A message from Councillor David Monk, Chairman of Rainford Parish Council

We have now passed the landmark figure of 100 households receiving support from our Rainford Volunteers. Each volunteer is providing essential help to dedicated recipients so they have become familiar faces. Shopping and collecting prescriptions are among the important tasks but, if you are someone living alone, just a phone call can make a huge difference in lifting spirits.

A lot is spoken about the community spirit in Rainford and how residents come together when needed. Our volunteers have demonstrated the Rainford character at its recognisable best; a quiet decency, generosity and an overwhelming desire to help others.

On behalf of all in the village, I offer a heartfelt thank you to the volunteers for their selfless dedication and enormous support in these challenging times.

Bin/Waste Collections

As normal around the Bank Holidays, we won’t be collecting bins on Good Friday or Easter Monday.

We’ll simply collect your bins one day later than usual.

If your collection is due on Friday 10th April, it will be collected on Saturday 11th.

The same for Easter Week, beginning Monday 13th April – one day later than your usual collection day, including Friday 17th, when collections take place Saturday 18th.

Remember, due to increased pressure on our staffing levels from Covid-19 we’re only collecting brown bins and medical waste (where applicable) currently. Please place your recycling in your brown bin.

Support our crews by cleaning your bin handles before and after use, ensuring your bin lid can be closed, and not leaving additional bags of waste out. These can’t be taken to reduce the amount of potentially contaminated surfaces our crews touch.

FOOD APPEAL
Corpus Christi charity ‘Our Warm Welcome ‘ have teamed up with Teardrop and St Helens Food Bank to get supplies to those in our area who are really struggling.
If you are able to support them, please use your exercise time tomorrow, (Tuesday 7 April), to take what you can to Corpus Christi Church Garden between 1pm and 3pm or 6pm and 8pm. The list below are things that are particularly needed, but any food will be very gratefully received and distributed to members of our wider community who are particularly affected by the current situation.

Well Done Rainford High

The school’s science department gathered the available aprons, goggles and gloves, and has given them to the North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, where one student’s parent works.

The donation will help support the NHS staff in Greater Manchester, Halton, Knowsley, Sefton, St Helens, Warrington and Wigan.

Ian Young, principal of Rainford High said: “We are so grateful for the all the hard work of NHS staff during the pandemic. Currently our PPE supplies are not required and so we are delighted to help those on the frontline who are saving lives.”

Cemeteries and Crematrouims

Restrictions in place at crematorium and cemeteries

In the interest of public health, St Helens Council has taken the decision to put restrictions in place at the borough’s crematorium and cemeteries.

St Helens Borough has two cemeteries – one on Rainford Road, St Helens, which has a crematorium – with the other in Park Road South, Newton-Willows, for burials only.

Funerals and burials will still go ahead as planned, with a current limit of no more than ten immediate family members permitted to attend, in accordance to government social gathering and distancing guidelines.

While public access to both cemeteries is still available, it is asked that residents refrain from visiting the grounds until it is safe to do so.

St Helens Council’s cabinet member for environmental services, Councillor Andy Bowden, said:

“The council is having to make some really difficult decisions in light of the rapidly-changing developments around Covid-19, and given the sensitivity linked to this particular service – this was one of the harder decisions we’ve had to make, but i hope an understandable one if we are to do what we can to stop the spread of this deadly virus.

“It is extremely important that we consider the health of both mourners and staff – but we will continue to work closely with funeral directors and monitor how we continue to deliver services as respectfully as possible at this difficult time.”

Chairman’s Announcement

***ANNOUNCEMENT***
We want to inform you of the steps we are taking to help our community through these unprecedented times.
We aim to have our Volunteer Service up and running within the next few days and will update you all on how and when to register as volunteers or if you are someone who needs assistance. Our concern is the safeguarding of both the volunteer and the vulnerable.
It is important that those requiring help do not engage anyone not known to them unless they are in possession of Identification.
Some local businesses are providing a home delivery service and we will shortly be publishing their details.
We will continue to follow Government advice as the situation develops and keep you updated on any changes that affect our community.
